See the Sun as you’ve never seen it before… in a safe and creative observing environment.
We can never look directly at the Sun without eye protection or specialist equipment. The Observing the Sun workshop gives people the opportunity to look at the Sun safely using a range of equipment including a hydrogen-alpha solar telescope, adapted astronomical telescopes, a solar projector, filtered binoculars and eclipse glasses, along with anything else we can create to safely look at the Sun!
We’ll start by giving a short talk about our nearest star… how it was formed, what it’s made of and how it will end its days! This part can take place in a classroom or hall before moving outside to safely look at the Sun. If no indoor space is available, we can improvise!
The main activity will take place outside, ideally in a big open space, away from buildings and trees. We’ll be looking at the Sun using projection and different filters. A variety of solar features will be visible… sunspots, prominences, and the granular surface of the Sun.
IMPORTANT: This workshop is weather dependant, so if it’s cloudy outside, we can substitute the solar viewing with a one-hour lecture-style talk – The Sun: Exploring the hot stuff – with spectacular images and video of our nearest star.
The costs for our Observing the Sun workshop are:
£75 for up to one hour
£50 for each additional hour (running consecutively)
Prices include all specialist equipment.
