A hands-on workshop making and launching a precious cargo to an imagined martian landscape.
Sending landers and rovers to Mars isn’t easy. And with precious cargo, like robots and (not too far in the future) people, we have to make sure that they arrive safely onto the surface of the Red Planet.
The Mission to Mars workshop starts with a short talk about past, present and future missions to Mars, explaining how to successfully land a payload onto the surface of another planet.
Working in small groups of between two and five, participants then get the chance to design and build their own Mars lander which will include a delicate cargo and landing device. A mission commander from each group will then move to the launch site and jettison the craft whilst the ground crew eagerly await its arrival. Once retrieved, the craft is carefully opened to discover if the cargo arrived safely.
This workshop is perfect for schools, clubs and STEM events; it covers planetary science, together with design and engineering. The main activity takes place in a hall or classroom, but a safe and accessible first floor window or balcony is needed for the ‘launch pad’.
Each session lasts up to one hour and we’ll need another 15 minutes to clean up and prep for the next session.
The costs for our Mission to Mars workshop are:
Half day: £200 (max. 3 workshops)
Full day: £300 (max. 5 workshops)
ADD-ON: reduced costs available if booked with other activities… ask for details
Price includes all materials and specialist equipment..
TRAVEL & OVERNIGHT STAY
Travel is free within a 20 mile radius of Hastings, and charged at 45p per mile if you need us to travel further. And if the journey will take us over 2 hours, we may have to charge for an overnight stay which costs an extra £40. If our journey includes tolls and ferry charges, these will be added too.
LOCATION & SPACE
This workshop can take place anywhere that can accommodate a projector and screen, plus enough tables and chairs for the audience (a classroom, library, or village hall will do just fine). Pupils will work in teams of two to five. A safe launching site is also needed, ideally from a first floor window or indoor balcony.
