This workshop kicks off with a talk about these elusive icy visitors and concludes with an chilly astro bake-off!

The introduction answers questions like “What is a comet?”, “Where do they come from?” and “When were they formed?” and introduces famous cometary names, revealing some history behind them. Comet 67P/Churyomov-Geresamenko features in the talk, which was visited by the Rosetta Mission.

Comet making at Horsham STEMfestFollowing the talk is a demonstration of ice cooking in a mobile cosmic kitchen. Using ingredients found in real comets, the demonstrator will make an icy scale model in front of the audience, who will then get the chance to make their own comets in a chilling hands-on workshop. Brrrrrrr! Finally, participants will be asked for their scientific observations… what did the comet smell like?, was it making a noise? and what did they see happening?

We supply all the ingredients, but need at least two weeks notice to order in the supplies. We’ll also bring along all the necessary safety equipment.

IMPORTANT: Each session lasts about one hour and we’ll need another 15 minutes to clean up and prep for the next session (its messy!). The workshop works best in a science lab or classroom, with a projector, water supply and deep sink (ideally in the same room). We can also run this as as a drop-in workshop for STEM events and science fairs.

TRAVEL & OVERNIGHT STAY
Travel is free within a 20 mile radius of Hastings, and charged at 45p per mile if you need us to travel further. And if the journey will take us over 2 hours, we may have to charge for an overnight stay which costs an extra £40. If our journey includes tolls and ferry charges, these will be added too.

LOCATION & SPACE
This workshop works best in a science lab or classroom, but can take place anywhere that can accommodate a projector and screen, plus enough tables and chairs for the audience. Running water with a deep sink and drainer, either in the room or nearby, is also needed for this messy, hands-on workshop.
