Satellites affect our every-day lives. Mobile phones, TV channels, navigation, weather forecasts; all use satellite communications. They also play an essential role in space exploration.

This is a new workshop developed for Key Stages 2, 3 and 4 and encompasses all of the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering and maths). It sets out to explain why we need satellites, their myriad of uses and the very topical de-orbit technologies currently being implemented.

Rosetta's solar wing deployment

A visual presentation kicks off the session, with video footage, colourful slides and a brief talk about satellite science and technology and the part the UK Space Agency and British industry has to play. The talk will also discuss the cost per kg of launching useful things into space.

Armed with their new-found knowledge, participants will then conceive, design and build their own satellite and make a short presentation to the group about its use and (depending on ability) potential launch cost.

The whole activity will last between one and a half and two hours, and will need a hall or classroom (with tables and chairs) to accommodate around 30 people.

To book this exciting new workshop, or to find out more about it, send us a message using the form below.

Costs for the Build a Satellite Workshop are:
£275 for a half day (two workshops/up to 60 participants)
£495 for a full Day (four workshops/up to 120 participants)
Price includes all materials and specialist equipment.

This workshops can take place anywhere that can accommodate a projector and screen, plus enough tables and chairs for the audience (a classroom, library, or village hall will do just fine). Pupils will work in teams of two to four.
