Get creative with space! Be a satellite engineer for a day… design, build, and present your concept to your fellow satellite builders.
Satellites affect our every-day lives. Mobile phones, TV channels, navigation, weather forecasts; all use satellite communications. They also play an essential role in space exploration. This workshop, developed for Upper KS2, KS3 and KS4, encompasses all of the STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths); it sets out to explain why we need satellites, their myriad of uses and the de-orbit technologies currently being implemented.
A visual presentation kicks off the session, with video footage, colourful slides and a brief talk about satellite science and technology, and the many career opportunities within the satellite industry. The talk will also discuss the cost per kilo of launching useful things into space.
Armed with their new-found knowledge, participants will then conceive, design and build their own satellite and make a short presentation to the group about its use and (depending on ability) potential launch cost.
The whole activity lasts between one and two hours, and will need a hall or classroom (with tables and chairs) to accommodate up to 30 people.
The costs for our Build a Satellite workshop are:
£275 for a half day: up to 2 x workshops
£495 for a full day: up to 3 x workshops
Price includes all materials and specialist equipment.
