Course length: 6 weeks
Start date: Sept 2020 (TBC)
Time: Mondays 10am – 12pm
Venue: White Rock Hotel
Course code: SOS2010DAY
The Spectrum of Space course will reveal the wonders of the Universe in unimaginable ways. Using the electromagnetic spectrum you’ll learn about star formation and the dynamic structure of the Sun; you’ll discover how radio is transforming our understanding of astronomy; and how microwaves penetrate clouds and help predict changes here on Earth.
IF THE START DATE IS NOT YET CONFIRMED, PLEASE ENROL TO REGISTER YOUR INTEREST AND WE’LL BE BACK IN TOUCH AS SOON AS WE HAVE CONFIRMED DATES.
Most of the electromagnetic spectrum (EMS) is invisible to us humans. In this 6-week classroom-based course you’ll learn about the EMS and how we use all parts of it – from radio waves to gamma rays – to transform our understanding of the cosmos. You’ll learn about telescopes and space missions past, present, and future that help us to see the invisible, and how accidental discoveries have led to groundbreaking science! Each week you’ll learn about a different wavelength of light, how it’s applied to astronomy, and its applications in everyday life. There will be practical activities to help demonstrate different wavelengths (solar telescope, infrared camera, parabolic dishes, etc), alongside lecture-style learning, using incredible images captured by telescopes at the European Southern Observatory and with a plethora of space telescopes. No previous knowledge of astronomy is required.
COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
After studying this course you should be able to:
- Describe the electromagnetic spectrum and compare its wavelengths
- Explain how different wavelengths of light are used in astronomy and classify space images based on their wavelength
- Demonstrate the EMS using everyday items
- Use visible light to safely observe and analyse the Sun
- Download and use apps for observing the Sun in invisible light
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- Notepad and pen
- Mobile device for downloading apps (optional)
- Folder or ring binder for hand-outs
- Home or mobile internet connection for access to Course Page
